The Transatlantic Slave Trade Commission was created in ... by legislation....

The goals of the Commission are as follows:

1. Examine the institution of slavery from 1619 - 1865

a. Capture and procurement of Africans
b Transport of Africans to U.S. (U.S. colonies)
c. Sale and acquisition of Africans as chattel (inter/intra state commerce)
d. Treatment of African slaves (deprivation of freedom, exploitation of labor, destruction of culture, language, religion and families)

2. Examine the extent to which federal and state governments supported institution of slavery (i.e., constitutional and statutory provisions, government prevention of freed African slaves to repatriate to their homeland)

3. Examine federal and state laws that discriminated in the public and private sectors against freed slaves (1865 to present).

4. Examine othr forms of discrimination in the public and private sectors against freed African slaves (1865 to present)

5. Examine lingering negative effects of the institution of slavery in (1 - 4 above) and on living African Americans and in U.S. society.

6. Recommend appropriate ways to educate the general public on findings (i.e., add to the K-12 curricuuuum, post secondary curriculum, teacher training programs, etc.)

7. Examine where African Americans still suffer from lingering effects of matters in items 1-4 above.

The Transatlantic Slave Trade Commission will include the following appointments:

Senate President 5
Speaker of the House of Representatives 5
Governor 5
Minority Leader of the Senate 5
Minority Leader of the House 5

Project Management

The Illinois Transatlantic Slave Trade Commission project is managed by the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies. Professor Conrad W. Worrill, Ph.D is the Director of the Center for Inner City Studies. Dr. Anderson Thompson is the project's Director of Research and Evaluation.
