The Honorable Bernetta D. Bush was elected Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County in 1992 and currently is assigned to the Chancery Division. Judge Bush served as an Assistant Legal Advisor for the Illinois State Board of Education from 1979 to 1991 where she specialized in civil litigation, special education litigation, and administrative law. From 1977 to 1979 she served as attorney with the Judicare Project of the Legal Service Corporation in Chicago. In this capacity, she handled civil matters for senior citizens and women. Judge Bush has extensive experience as a private practitioner. Her practice areas included civil litigation, real estate transactions, and general civil matters.
Judge Bush also has an extensive background in the field of Education. Before entering the legal profession she taught school on the college, high school and elementary levels. She has worked as an educational administrator, consultant and has conducted many seminars and lectures in various educational areas. She has served as a trustee for the Board of Governors and served on the City Colleges of Chicago Board of Directors, the Illinois Judges Association Board of Directors, and the Illinois Judicial Council. She also has served as a member of the Inquiry Board of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Committee, the Illinois Commission on Children, the Constitutional Rights Foundation, and the Education Commission of the States.
Judge Bush is a member of the Illinois Judicial Council, Illinois Judges Association, Judicial Council of the National Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association, and the Cook County Bar Association. Judge Bush is the recipient of many awards and has also authored or contributed to several legal publications.
Judge Bush graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a B.A. degree in History and with an M.A. degree in Education. She received her J.D. degree from the DePaul University College of Law.
