Elga L. Jefferies (D-Chicago) was appointed in June of 2006 to fill the vacancy in the 26th Representative District created by the death of Assistant Majority Leader Lovana “Lou” Jones.
Since 2000, Elga Jefferies, a lifetime resident of Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, has served as the Deputy Mayor of Bronzeville, an elected position re-established by the Bronzeville Merchants Association. Jefferies is also active in Operation PUSH, the Task Force for Black Empowerment and the Palmer House for Boys.
Prior to her appointment, Jefferies served as Jones’ legislative aide for 19 years, overseeing office management, constituent service and legislative development. In 2002 Jefferies was appointed to fill the remainder of State Senator Margaret Smith’s term following her resignation due to health problems.
